What is epitalon?

Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed by Vladimir Khavinson in Russia. It’s based on epithalamin, an extract from the pineal gland.

Most of its research came out of Khavinson’s institute in St. Petersburg over several decades, and a related family of short peptides, sometimes called bioregulators, came from the same group.

Epitalon research on telomeres and aging

A 2003 study reported that it switched on telomerase in human cell cultures and lengthened telomeres. Rodent studies from the same group reported longer lifespan and fewer tumors in some strains, and other work looked at melatonin production and circadian rhythm.

Most of this research comes from one group and hasn’t been widely repeated elsewhere. It isn’t approved for any use. Search PubMed for the papers.

Measuring and storage

It ships as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder in a sealed sterile glass vial. Before reconstitution, keep vials in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, or in the freezer for longer storage, away from light.

To reconstitute, let the vial reach room temperature, then add sterile diluent slowly down the side of the glass. Swirl gently and don’t shake it. As an example, adding 2 mL to a 10 mg vial gives 5 mg/mL, so every 0.1 mL holds 500 mcg. Write the date and volume on the vial.

Once mixed, keep it refrigerated and use it within the window your protocol allows. Most labs avoid repeated freezing and thawing of reconstituted peptide, because it can break the chains down.
