What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide. Most of our DNA is in the cell nucleus, but mitochondria carry a small genome of their own, and MOTS-c is coded in it. Changhan Lee and colleagues at USC described it in 2015.
It acts as a signal from mitochondria to the rest of the cell, and it can move into the nucleus to affect gene activity under stress.
MOTS-c research
The 2015 Cell Metabolism paper found it activated AMPK, improved insulin sensitivity and prevented diet-induced obesity in mice. A 2021 study in Nature Communications reported that it improved physical performance in young and old mice.
Human data is limited to measuring natural levels in blood and muscle. It isn’t approved for any use. See the research on PubMed.

Measuring and storage
It ships as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder in a sealed sterile glass vial. Before reconstitution, keep vials in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, or in the freezer for longer storage, away from light.
To reconstitute, let the vial reach room temperature, then add sterile diluent slowly down the side of the glass. Swirl gently and don’t shake it. As an example, adding 2 mL to a 5 mg vial gives 2.5 mg/mL, so every 0.1 mL holds 250 mcg. Write the date and volume on the vial.
Once mixed, keep it refrigerated and use it within the window your protocol allows. Most labs avoid repeated freezing and thawing of reconstituted peptide, because it can break the chains down.
Lab testing and certificate of analysis
Each batch of this peptide is tested by MZ Biolabs, an independent lab in Arizona, for identity and purity. The current certificate of analysis is dated 10/17/2025 and reports 99.48% purity. Email us for the full COA if you need it for your lab records.
MOTS-c FAQ
What does MOTS-c stand for?
Mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c.
How does it work?
In mice it activated AMPK, a sensor of cell energy, and changed how cells use glucose.
How should the vials be stored?
Refrigerated and away from light.
Why researchers buy from Sports Technology Labs
We’re a US company that sells only what we’ve had tested. Each peptide batch goes to MZ Biolabs in Arizona before it’s listed, and the purity and COA date go on the product page. Vials are lyophilized, sealed and stored cold. We don’t use discreet billing tricks or vague labels. What’s on the vial is what’s in it.
Shipping, returns and support
We offer free US shipping on orders over $149, plus an express option at checkout. If something isn’t right, our 60-day money-back guarantee covers it. You can email us any time with questions about testing, storage or your order.
For laboratory research use only
