What is liquid RU-58841?

RU-58841 (also known as PSK-3841 or HMR-3841) is a non-steroidal antiandrogen developed by Roussel Uclaf in France in the 1980s. It was designed to be applied to the skin, where it blocks DHT and testosterone from binding androgen receptors in hair follicles, without lowering androgen levels in the blood.

That’s what sets it apart from finasteride. Finasteride lowers DHT by blocking 5-alpha-reductase, while RU-58841 leaves DHT alone and blocks the receptor instead.

RU-58841 research on hair growth

Much of the research used the stump-tailed macaque, a monkey that loses scalp hair much like men do. Topical RU-58841 increased hair density and thickness in those animals. In another study, scalp grafts from balding men were placed on nude mice, and grafts treated with RU-58841 grew more active follicles and faster hair.

Hamster studies found strong local antiandrogen activity with little effect elsewhere in the body. Human trials were started but never completed. The published work is searchable on PubMed.
